My students love opening that barn door to see WHAT'S inside! In “What’s in the Barn?”, students ask “What can it be?”, use the core word OPEN to open the barn door, and reveal a farm animal — then imitate its sound (moo, baa, neigh, oink, cluck, quack!). It’s interactive, it’s playful, and it sneaks in important early language skills: the core words “open” and “what,” answering the WH question “What’s in the barn?”, identifying farm animal vocabulary, and practicing imitation.

📖 Sample Text:

“What’s in the barn?

What can it be?

Open the door…

There’s a cow, I see!”

MOO!

🎓 Educational Benefits: Targets AAC core vocabulary (open, what) — high-frequency words students use all day — plus WH-question comprehension, farm animal vocabulary, and verbal imitation through animal sounds (a powerful, motivating way to get little voices going!). The repetitive, predictable structure is perfect for emerging communicators, and the door-opening reveal keeps motivation sky-high.

  • Students use the core word OPEN to open the door and reveal the animal
